Making of the Kungsholm of 1953

These pictures are contributed by Bengt Löfgren.

The slides were used for teaching geography, commerce and shipping in Swedish schools during the 1950's

A Female Crew Member's Cabin (Nurse)
A ship as big as the Kungsholm, which also is intended for cruises, needs a large crew, of which some will be women, i.e. nurses, hair dressers, etc.

The Crew's Mess
This mess is for the deck- and engine crew. When the Kungsholm is in regular North Atlantic service, there are 355 crew members, and during cruises 422. The number of passengers during cruises is 400.

Heading Home
On a beautiful autumn day in 1953, the Kungsholm left Vlissingen, Holland, heading for Göteborg. The aft pennant is 42 meters long, one meter for each of the 42 months of construction.

In Göteborg Harbor
The Kungsholm was greeted by hundreds of small boats on the river, and thousands of people on the shores, when she arrived on October 10, 1953. The Göteborg harbor, and Swedish shipping, received a beautiful new ship, a splendid result of the combined skill of Swedish ship designers and Dutch shipbuilders.
