T Odenlund

The Cashier was third in rank in the Purser's Department. T Odenlund was born in 1904 and served on the SAL ships until the late sixties. Mr Odenlund was a likeable soul, always carrying his pipe as a mandatory accessory. In the days of three passenger classes on board, Odenlund simply opened a cashier's desk on top of a cargo hatch on deck, to facilitate the third class passengers. Odenlund served on the Gripsholm during the WWII exchange and repatriation voyages. When the ship visited Mombasa, he went ashore wearing a tropical helmet, white shirt and shorts, and white knee-long socks. He returned to the ship in a horse drawn taxi. The ship was expecting a visit from a high ranking local official, and a welcoming committee of officers were standing at attention on deck as Odenlund crossed the gangway, accepting their greeting with a dignified smile. A while later, when the expected guest arrived, there was no welcome committe to be seen. Odenlund was cashier on the Stockholm at the time of the collision with Andrea Doria. In 1968, he was already retired, but returned to serve as cashier during a short New Year's Cruise to Madeira and North Africa from Gothenburg, while the Kungsholm's ordinary cashier, BG Andersson, was on shore leave. The U.S. Merchant Marine ribbon bars on Mr Odenlund's jacket show that he served on the Gripsholm during WWII.
