The Gripsholm returned to New Jersey from Lisbon in March 1944, completing its third voyage. Voice of America aired a radio program in which Swedish crew members sent greetings to Sweden. Rune Dahlstrand was one of them, seen on the far left in the photo.

Mr. Dahlstrand was one of the lucky crew members who had been able to place a telephone call from Lisbon to his home town Borås, Sweden. He could hear the operators saying "ready Lisbon", "ready Madrid", "ready Paris", "ready Hamburg", "ready Copenhagen", "ready Borås"".

After a short conversation he heard "disconnecting Hamburg", "disconnecting Paris", "disconnecting Madrid", "disconnecting Lisbon", due to a bomb raid.
