The SS MARIEHOLM was built in 1934 for Swedish American Line and, just like SS BORGHOLM and SS KASTELHOLM, she was to be used for feeder traffic in the Baltic Sea. The passangers were later to be brought to USA from Gothenburg by MS GRIPSHOLM, MS KUNGSHOLM or TS DROTTNINGHOLM. Her capacity was 148 passengers and the compounder steam engine aboard is today regarded as unique. Between 1940 and 1977 she belonged to the Admirality of the Royal Swedish Marine. Nowdays she is a part of Gothenburg Maritime Centre/Museum.

Saturday, May 25th
9.00 am From 09.00 am you will be able to visit the exhibition of articles from the SAL and watch films and travelogues.
Address: Park Avenue Hotel. Conference department with the two rooms GRIPSHOLM and KUNGSHOLM.

In the lobby, second floor, you will find the work of art ”Life in a Bohuslän Fishing Village”. Once it was placed aboard the MS STOCKHOLM (1948) after having been rescued from the fire aboard the ”Italian” MS STOCKHOLM of 1938. Perhaps you will be able to find out who is Greta Garbo in the painting!

12.00 Departure from Stenpiren aboard the SS BOHUSLÄN.

A chance to make a sentimental trip in Göteborg ! On your way down to Stenpiren you can pass by the BROSTRÖMIA. Now it is used by the Court of Appeal for Wes- tern Sweden. The annex buildiing, where you earlier could find the personnel department, is now rebuilt to contain apartments etc.

On the Stenpiren you will be able to see the Delaware Monument. This statue was made by Carl Milles in two copies. The other copy is to be seen i Wilmington, Delaware. In 1938 it was delivered by the Crown prince of Sweden when the MS KUNGSHOLM arrived there. Receiver of the monument was the President of the USA, Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The SS BOHUSLÄN was built in 1914 by the Eriksberg shipyard in Göteborg for the New Marstrand Steamship Company in Marstrand. She plied the route Göteborg- Marstrand-Lysekil-Smögen-Gravarne for around 40 years bringing passangers and goods in all kinds of weather. In 1966 she was sold to a scrap yard but the Steam Ship Society was founded. ”The Lady” was purchased and saved. Her sailings for the new owners started and continued ever since. Passenger capacity 280, length: 43.13 m., extreme breadth: 7.42 m., triple expan sion steam engine 700 ihp, 12 knots.

First stop will be at the former Eriksberg shipyard (once belonging to the Broström group). We will be there to visit the yard Terra Nova for a round trip. Here is a copy, scale 100, built of the vessel GÖTHEBORG.

It is to be a full rigged ship. Length, including the bowsprit, 58.5 m. breath 11 m, tall-ness midship 10 m. The bulding ot the GÖTHEBORG started in June, 1995. She will be launched in 2002 with a royal godmother, just like our ships. In the year of 2004 she is to start her first journey to China. The route is to pass some ports we know from the cruisings with SAL, around Africa, passing India and Austrilia and finally to Shang-hai, the twin town of Gothenburg in China.

The original GÖTHEBORG belonged to the Swedish East India Company (1731-1813). She was built in Stockholm in 1738 and left Gothenburg in March, 1743 on her final journey. GÖTHEBORG arrived in Canton, China in the Summer of 1744 and started to load the 340 lests or 833 tons for Gothenburg. She left Canton in January, 1745 and arrived in Gothenburg in September. The weather and wind were perfect, but, she ran aground just outside the fortress New Elfsborg. So close to the homeport. The GÖTHEBORG became a total loss.

After ”Terra Nova” a tour through the Gothenburg archipelago, rounding the well known light house, for a traditional ”Vinga snaps”. Baguette and a beer or a glass of wine will be served. A small bar is to be open. On our way back, when passing whartf 36, Amerikakajen very close the SS BOHUS-LÄN will blow her steam whistle for our vessels, all present and absent friends. We will be back approx. 5.00 pm. Anyone interested in a “Pool” for passing Vinga?

6.30 pm Supper at Park Avenue Hotel
Three-course dinner, 3 glasses of wine, coffee.
Menu:
Classic white bait roe tart on dark rye bread with shellfish mayonnaise
Roasted whole fillet of milk fed veal served with a lemon flavoured red wine
sauce and a creamy potato au gratin
Classic Cremè caramel
After the dinner we hope to have members of the different Gripsholm- and Kungsholm orchestras giving us opportunity to enter the dance floor. A bar will be open for cocktails before and drinks after the dinner.
